SHE'S THE ULTIMATE IRRESISTIBLE FORCE
If oil were found beneath the streets of Paris, how would civilization fare against the demands of corporate greed? The answer lies with the flamboyantly determined woman whose quirky spirit informs this classic 20th-century comedy, as scathing as it is timely.

Translator of The Madwoman of Chaillot.
Stratford: Molière's Don Juan, 2006.
David Edney has translated some 60 plays from French, and more recently from Italian and Spanish. Eleven have been published, including Beaumarchais, The Three Figaro Plays (Dovehouse); Molière, The Lavish Lovers (CRRS); and Jarry, King Ubu, in Broadview Anthology of Drama. Many of the translations have been performed, including: Molière's The Miser (Citadel Theatre, directed by Jean Gascon), Beaumarchais's The Barber of Seville and Molière's George Dandin (Persephone Theatre), Jules Renard's To Have and to Hold in the Shaw Festival's reading series, broadcast on CBC radio; Jaques/Jouvet, Elvira (25th Street Theatre, Chichester Festival, and the Stratford Festival's reading series). French playwright Olivier Py has directed two Edney translations of his works: The Exaltation of the Labyrinth (New York University) and Epistle to Young Actors (Edinburgh Festival).
Mr. Edney is an Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Saskatchewan. He applauds the Stratford Festival's willingness to produce drama not often staged in North America, by authors such as Schiller, Corneille, Lope de Vega, and Giraudoux. Such broadening of horizons opens minds and enriches lives. In working on this project, he has appreciated advice from dramaturge Bob White and director Donna Feore, input from actors on the text, and the calm, unflappable efficiency of stage management.
