Some artists fight to push their art forward while others bask in the music of a fondly remembered past. Special guest Maev Beaty joins Derek Conrod (French horn), Heather Morrison (piano) and Peter Shackleton (clarinet) to explore how artists over the centuries confronted boundaries through words and music. 

Deal With the Devil

Monday, July 22
Stravinsky, best known for his groundbreaking orchestral works, composed L’histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) as a small theatre chamber piece. Based on a Russian folk tale, it’s the story of a soldier who trades his violin to the devil for untold riches. Scott Wentworth joins Festival musicians as narrator of this masterpiece.

Trumpeter Larry Larson and his Guys offer the closest thing to having a private concert in your own home. Sit back, relax and enjoy their tasty mix of classics old and new! 

Why We Tell the Story: A Celebration of Black Musical Theatre

Monday, August 12
Marcus Nance, Alexis Gordon and Vanessa Sears perform songs from the African-American musical-theatre canon. With special guest Robert Markus. 

Canadian Classics with Dayna Manning

Monday, August 19
Canadian singer-songwriter Dayna Manning presents the never-ending story of song through original works and Canadian classics. 

Silent Films by Chaplin, Lloyd and Johnson

Monday, August 26
An evening of silent film with live music scored by bassist Michael McClennan and performed by Festival musicians. Films include Charlie Chaplin’s feature The Kid, Harold Lloyd’s Bumping into Broadway and a new short animation by Stratford company member Galen Johnson.
