THE SUBLIME POWER OF CONVERSION

Lobby, Festival Theatre
Thursday, June 23, 2016
11 am to 12 pm

From Emperor Constantine to Elizabeth I to Oprah Winfrey, conversion has been a sublime instrument of power – a way for leaders to control the souls as well as the bodies of their followers. And it has also been a means for ordinary people to stake out their own powers of self-determination. Join McGill University’s Paul Yachnin for an exploration of how the history of conversion has shaped modern culture and how plays like Henry IV and As You Like It can illuminate the continuing power of conversion up to and including the 21st century. Presented by the Early Modern Conversions Project, at the Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas (IPLAI), McGill University.
