Author of A Wrinkle in Time (1962)
Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) was the author of more than 60 books, including the classic, A Wrinkle in Time. She was born in New York City, the only child of a writer father and pianist mother. The family moved to France during the Great Depression and she attended boarding school where she learned to discipline herself to write no matter what was going on around her. When the family returned to the US, she again attended boarding school, and continued to write. After her father died of pneumonia, her mother, bucking the expectations of society, insisted she go to college. A graduate of Smith, Madeleine originally thought she was going to be a playwright and appeared on Broadway, but after an editor saw a short story of hers and asked her if she had a novel, she promptly wrote one, A Small Rain.
In 1946, L'Engle married actor Hugh Franklin and moved to Connecticut where they had three children and ran the local general store. Continuing to write, she was discouraged that her work was not selling. Eventually, the family took a leap of faith and moved back to New York. It was during this time of transition that she wrote A Wrinkle in Time, which had a hard time finding a publisher, but eventually went on to win the prestigious Newbery Award
Madeleine has received many honours and awards, including the ALAN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Children's Literature from the National Council for Teachers of English, and the Margaret A. Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Library Association. In 2004 she received the National Humanities Medal "for her talent as a writer on spirituality and art and for her wonderful novels for young people. Her works inspire the imagination and reflect the creative spirit of America."
