Audience Advisory »

“IT WAS JOY, IT WAS SUBLIME, A SPLENDID WAY TO EARN A DIME.”

Lawrence Jameson is no stranger to the high life—he’s lived it for years by separating lonely rich ladies from their fortunes in a swanky Riviera town. When he and his chief competitor in the con business, Freddy Benson, make a bet to swindle an heiress out of $50,000, the professional scoundrels soon discover they may not always be the smartest people in the room. Inspired by the hit 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the musical comedy earned 11 Tony Award nominations for its hilarious hijinks and frivolity—beautifully reminiscent of an earlier age.

The 2025 Season is supported by Ophelia Lazaridis.

Production Co-Sponsors:

Sylvia D. Chrominska

This production is dedicated to the memory of director and producer Bobby Garcia.

    Book: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Jeffrey Lane was most recently represented on Broadway by his work with David Yazbek for the musical version of Pedro Almodóvar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. His work for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned him both Tony and Drama Desk nominations, as well as the Drama League Award for Best Musical. Perhaps best known for such television programs as Mad About You, Ryan's Hope, Lou Grant, Cagney & Lacey, The AFI Life Achievement Awards, The Tony Awards, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan, he is the winner of five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild Awards, two Peabodys, a Golden Globe and the Christopher Award, and the relatively good-natured loser of many more. According to imdb.com, he also played Clarice's father in the film The Silence of the Lambs. But he didn't.

    Music and Lyrics

Music and Lyrics: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

A varied career as a recording artist, Emmy-winning TV and film writer, music producer and pianist has somehow led Yazbek to a career on Broadway. His four shows, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and The Band's Visit were all Tony nominated for Best Score. Yazbek took home the Tony for Best Score for The Band's Visit. The Full Monty won him the Drama Desk Award for Best Music. As a recording artist, Yazbek is responsible for five albums: The Laughing Man (winner NAIRD award, Best Pop Album of the Year), Tock, Damascus, Tape Recorder and Evil Monkey Man.  He also produced the original cast albums of The Band's Visit, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,  and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, the first three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Yazbek scored the final season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, scored and performed the music for Larry David's giant Broadway hit Fish in the Dark, and built an Ikea storage shelf. Yazbek teamed up with 13 librettist Robert Horn to collaborate on the musical Tootsie, which won the Tony for Best Book of a Musical and was nominated for a total of 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
