Bijoux

Bijoux is located in the Large Wardrobe on the Lower Level of the Festival Theatre.

The Bijoux Department at the Stratford Festival provides touches that finish the costumes and help create a mood or character. The four artisans in the room use a wide range of techniques to bring the designer’s vision to life. They require a set of skills ranging from various forms of needlework to metalwork. It could be as delicate as beading and embroidery, or just the right lace on gloves or handkerchiefs, to roughly patching and darning. All manner of accessories cross their desks. Some seasons require linking together chainmail or carefully reproducing tiaras and medals. Jewelry can tell us details about the person as well as help set the time frame for the story. Magic can be made with layering metal findings and old-school methods like paint and glue. Materials are often used in unexpected ways with interesting results... lots of leather, flashy rings, macramé and even the odd protest button for strikers! No matter how fragile a piece may appear, it must be built with an integrity that ensures it lasts an entire season of often rough use.
